{"id":427,"date":"2012-06-11T22:58:47","date_gmt":"2012-06-12T05:58:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/?p=427"},"modified":"2012-06-11T22:58:47","modified_gmt":"2012-06-12T05:58:47","slug":"transit-of-venus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/?p=427","title":{"rendered":"Transit of Venus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>June 5th, in addition to being Elizabeth&#8217;s birthday, was the date of a most-rare astronomic occurrence: a &#8220;transit&#8221; of Venus across the Sun.\u00a0 Every 1.6 years Venus &#8220;laps&#8221; Earth, passing between us and the Sun.\u00a0 This is known as an inferior conjunction.\u00a0 Since the two planets orbit in slightly different planes, most of the time this conjunction is out of alignment and Venus passes well above or below the Sun as seen from Earth.\u00a0 The orbital planes intersect at two &#8220;nodes&#8221;, and when inferior conjunction occurs at a node we see Venus pass in front of the Sun &#8211; a transit.<\/p>\n<p>The last transit of Venus was in 2004, but the next will not happen until 2117.\u00a0 That means that most humans born in the next few years will never see it.\u00a0 I taped two shade-12 welding lenses to the front of my binoculars as a solar filter, and I was amazed to see not only the dot of Venus but also five sunspots.\u00a0 The transit lasted six hours and was still in progress as the sun set.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_431\" style=\"width: 654px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/venustransit.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-431\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-431\" title=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/venustransit.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/venustransit.jpg 644w, https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/venustransit-300x272.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sony SLR camera with 300 mm telephoto, shade 12 welding filter, 1\/2500 sec, F\/16.
