{"id":250,"date":"2011-12-17T22:25:13","date_gmt":"2011-12-18T06:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/?p=250"},"modified":"2011-12-17T22:25:13","modified_gmt":"2011-12-18T06:25:13","slug":"yurting-on-the-sunny-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/?p=250","title":{"rendered":"Yurting on the sunny side"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year a group of us took off the weekend after finals for three days on the sunny eastern side of the Cascades, sleeping in yurts at Tumalo State Park and skiing\/snowshoeing during the day.\u00a0 We enjoyed it so much that we did it again this year from December 11 to 13.\u00a0 Different folks arrived at different times, but in all we had ten people: Kelly, Kevin, Katie and James, Rosalie and Andrew, Ebba and John, and of course Elizabeth and myself.<\/p>\n<p>Last year the weather was warm and rainy.\u00a0 This year we had the unending high pressure that keeps the valleys in fog and the mountains in bright sun.\u00a0 The only downside was a relative shortage of snow &#8211; only the highest elevations had enough for skiing and the snow there was crusted and icy.<\/p>\n<p>We shared food and music in the evenings; perhaps my favorite part was rocking out on the double-barrel cedar flute with drum, fiddle, and Kelly&#8217;s foot-tapping as accompaniment.\u00a0 We went through most of the songs we knew and only stopped when the camp host shut us down at 10:30.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have any pictures from the yurts or the campground, but I can probably dig up a few from my friends.<\/p>\n<p>On our second day we headed to Dutchman Flat, at 6200 feet, for cross-country skiing.\u00a0 We chose an &#8220;intermediate&#8221; trail with some short climbs and descents that caused many wipe-outs on the icy snow.\u00a0 But the beautiful weather made up for it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_226\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030319.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-226\" title=\"P1030319\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030319-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030319-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030319.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking south toward Mount Bachelor.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030321.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"P1030321\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030321-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030325.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"P1030325\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030325-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The last part of the trail followed the closed-in-winter Cascade Lakes highway, which is groomed as a ski and snowmobile superhighway.\u00a0 Easy to coast along in the shadow of the Three Sisters.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030339.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"P1030339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.luterra.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/P1030339-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">South Sister on the left, with Middle and North Sister behind.
