Around the house, March-April 2009

I set an ambitious goal of breaking ground for three new garden plots over the break, which ended up requiring ~16 hours of digging. I double-dug all of them to bury the sod.

I uncovered our septic tank. Mmm...sewage. Maybe our crops from this area will enjoy the extra fertilizer.

After double-dig.

Our house, 3/30/09, daffodils in bloom.

My "odd bin," 8' x 12' x 5' high, built in early March.

The beginnings of our garden.

Young onions, basil, flowers.

Bird feeders with chickadee and freshly tilled earth.

The big new front plot and the "rabbit poo shed."

Two more new plots, one extending up to the shed and the other across the path, over the site of our burn pile.

I bought a cherry tree, since our collection of fruit trees presently lacks cherries.

Chickens!

Chicks! (I built them this larger enclosure in the garage.)

4/11/09 - three loads of mixed woodchips and horse manure from the neighbor's stables, with a fourth load for the compost pile. It was a trick backing the rig to that position, following the path where Ali is carrying a pail of wood ashes to be added to the plots.

Plum tree in bloom!

The chickens were curious about the large, red, wheeled thing.

Woodpile with some birch and fir/pine added.

Slowly filling the odd bin.
